The Newbury Musical Theatre Company is in rehearsal for its upcoming main stage production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, July 24, at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 25, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m. Performances will be held at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury.

This year’s cast includes 45 people from Southbury and surrounding towns. Among the cast are six families who will be performing together in the show.

The family-run theatre company was started in 2008 by the husband-and-wife team of Jim Tornatore and Cynthia Servetas. They have mounted two musical productions each summer for the past 18 years, with one show featuring children from grades 3 through 9 and the other populated by adults, which enables age-appropriate casting for the roles.

Joining them as musical director is their daughter, Stephanie Tornatore. Previous productions include: The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and Legally Blonde, to name a few.

“It’s always a thrill for us when we have entire families performing together,” said Servetas. “When we did ‘The Wizard of Oz’, we had a father, mother, three daughters, and their dog (starring as Toto)!”

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and premiered on Broadway in 1982. It is a family-friendly retelling of the story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. It features a catchy score and the entire libretto is set to music.
