If you’ve driven through the Transfer Station lately, you may have noticed signs pointing the way to a new route starting soon.

Beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 20, drivers at the Transfer Station will follow a different traffic pattern, according to a notice from the Town of Southbury. Hours of operation are not changing.

Drivers will first proceed to the solid waste deposit area, as usual. But instead of cutting through the center of the Transfer Station, drivers can either exit through the current exit gate or continue to the recycling deposit area. After leaving the recycling deposit area, drivers may exit through the current entrance gate.

Once the new traffic pattern takes effect, vehicles will not be permitted in the center of the Transfer Station between the solid waste and recycling deposit areas, in an effort to eliminate potential conflicts between equipment and vehicles.

Public Works Director Matt Tarnowski, said there was no specific incident to prompt the change, and that the wider entrance gate was installed several years ago to eventually allow this change.

“We’re trying to be proactive by minimizing the exposure that residents and their personal vehicles have to large trucks and equipment used in the central area,” Tarnowski said.
