Members of the Brotherhood at B’nai Israel Southbury recently welcomed retired FBI Special Agent Michael Shanbrom for a community breakfast focused on safety, awareness, and combating antisemitism in today’s climate.
Held on Sunday, May 17, the program featured Shanbrom, who now serves as a Regional Security Advisor for the Secure Community Network and the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut.
During his remarks, Shanbrom discussed situational awareness and practical steps individuals and communities can take to help safeguard themselves amid rising antisemitism and acts of violence targeting Jewish communities in the United States and abroad following the October 7 attacks in Israel.
Shanbrom was presented with the Brotherhood’s “Community Hero Award” in recognition of his continued efforts to help protect lives and strengthen community security initiatives across Connecticut.
Adam H. Brill, of B’nai Israel Southbury’s Brotherhood, spoke to the impact of Shanbrom’s remarks shared this past weekend.
“In today’s climate where we are sadly witnessing increased acts of violence and antisemitism against Jews and those who support Israel, this critical training serves to help members and our community to better protect themselves,” said Brill.
“We are grateful to Michael, the Secure Community Network and to Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut for their support and assistance in delivering this programming,” Brill added. “We are confident that everyone in the room left better informed and more aware of today’s threats and how to respond when the worst can occur.”
Southbury First Selectman Tim O’Neil also attended the event in support of the community gathering.
