I am very concerned that my town of Southbury has changed the Senior Center’s schedule and is closed on Fridays.
The Senior Center is the hub of activity for us seniors. It’s not just for exercise and activities, but also a place to gather, chat, and socialize, no matter what the weather. Without the Center, in the heat, there is one less cooling center. In the cold, there is one less warm center. Especially with our library closed, the Senior Center is more important than ever.
The Parks and Recreation Department is open on Fridays; the Senior Center should also be open since it provides similar services.
The Senior Center’s van is a vital service for seniors; why cut vital services at the exact time we need more services, not fewer? No van could mean no doctor appointments on Fridays, no shopping on Fridays, and no way to get to important places.
Seniors contribute to this town’s economy; we pay the same taxes as other homeowners, and we pay to support the schools despite having no children attending them. In other words, we subsidize the school system. Where is the support for our needs?
Our Town Board will meet shortly to decide on future scheduling for employees’ four-day workweek. Please restore the services seniors deserve: open the Senior Center on Fridays.
