Nicole Brewer, author and Assistant English Professor at Central Connecticut State University, will discuss the book she co-wrote with her father, Roger, titled “Withstanding the Lie.”

Roger and Nicole Brewer will talk about their book, “Withstanding the Lie”, which offers strategies to help people cope with the mental and emotional harm caused by bigotry. They will discuss their motivations behind writing the book, outline the strategies presented in the book, and suggest ways in which people can implement these strategies in their lives. During these challenging social and political times, “Withstanding the Lie” provides a concrete way for those involved in social justice work to protect and care for themselves as they strive to build a more fair and just society.

Nicole Brewer grew up in a small rural community in Connecticut. She received a bachelor’s degree from Hollins University in Virginia and a master’s degree from New York University. She received her Doctor of Education from Northeastern University. She is currently an assistant professor of English at Central Connecticut State University. Roger and Nicole have been working together on “Withstanding the Lie” since 2008.

Roger Brewer grew up in rural Georgia in a sharecropper family at a time and place where racial discrimination and racial segregation were dictated by culture and also required by law in all aspects of everyday life. Roger received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Hartford, and graduated from the University of Connecticut Law School with a Juris Doctor degree. He practiced law as a trial attorney for 29 years and took an early retirement to devote more time to teaching others the “Withstanding the Lie” strategy.
