Southbury is kicking off the holiday season with a community celebration on Saturday, December 6, featuring crafts, live music, and a visit from Santa.

The free event, organized by Southbury Parks and Recreation, will run rain-or-shine from 4 to 7 p.m., and includes a sensory-friendly hour for residents who need accommodations.

The indoor portion of the event will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Parks and Rec building at 561 Main Street South. During the indoor portion, there will be free crafts, games, cookie decorating, and a winter scene photo booth. Sensory-friendly activities for those who require accommodations will be there from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The outdoor portion will start at 5:00 p.m. next door at Town Hall, 501 Main Street South, where free hot cocoa and sweets will be served.

The Full Bloom food truck will have beef chili, hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and salads with hot coffee and cold drinks available for purchase.

Live music and sing-along songs will preview Santa’s arrival on a fire truck, and the holiday decorations illumination. Santa will be available for photos for a short time after the illumination ceremony. Keep a sharp eye out for a grump in green, too.

For those with mobility assistance needs, the Southbury Senior Center bus will offer transportation between the Parks and Recreation building and the Town Hall Green. Parking will be available at Town Hall’s lower parking lot, Parks and Recreation’s parking lot, Rochambeau Middle School’s and Pomperaug Elementary School’s parking lots. There will be a designated drop-off area, monitored by employees. There will be no parking at the Firehouse or Town Hall’s upper parking lot.

Southbury Parks and Recreation would like to thank the following individuals and groups for supporting this event: H.H. Stone, Kim Phelan, Knights of Columbus Council 5066, Michelle Rosen, PHS LatinX Club, The Price Family, Southbury Arts and Culture Alliance, Southbury Public Library, S.M.A.R.T., Southbury Fire Department, Southbury Public Works, and Southbury Senior Center.

Free programs throughout the season will take place at various times in the Parks and Rec building located at 561 Main St South. Register online for Luminary Decorating and Gift Wrapping Workshops at southburyct.myrec.com.

Non-perishable foods will be collected all season long in the Parks and Recreation building for the Southbury Food bank. A list of their critical needs can be found on their website: https://southburyfoodbank.org
