Southbury resident and published poet Claire Schreier Warner has been named the town’s next Poet Laureate.

Claire Schreier Warner was selected by a panel of three judges to succeed Faith Vicinanza, who became Southbury’s first Poet Laureate in 2022. Her three-year term will run from November 1, 2025, through October 31, 2028.

The Poet Laureate program, a partnership between the Southbury Public Library, Sustainable Southbury, and the Southbury Arts & Culture Alliance, aims to promote poetry and creative writing in the community. In her new role, Warner will host readings, lead writing workshops, and collaborate with local schools to encourage interest in poetry.

A public reception to celebrate her appointment will be held on Friday, October 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fireplace Room at the Southbury Public Library.

“Poetry has always been a part of my life,” Warner said. “Some of my earliest memories were of my mother reading me the poems of James Whitcomb Riley and Robert Louis Stevenson. Writing poetry is my way of seeing and making sense of an often-chaotic world.”
