From firehouse tours to a live rescue demonstration, Southbury’s emergency services are inviting residents behind the scenes this weekend.

The Southbury Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Southbury Police Department, Southbury Ambulance Association and Southbury Animal Control, will host Public Safety Day and an open house on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Center Firehouse, 461 Main Street South.

The free, family-friendly event will feature firehouse tours, safety demonstrations, and interactive activities. Firefighters will demonstrate a live vehicle extraction, where the jaws of life to cut open a donated car will be used as part of the rescue drill.

Visitors can also meet local first responders, learn about their roles in town and explore emergency vehicles up close. Kids will have the chance to operate a fire hose, take aim at water targets and leave with a goodie bag.
