For the second straight game, the Pomperaug (9-0-3) girls soccer team battled to a scoreless draw, this time in front of a lively Senior Night crowd on Tuesday against Masuk (8-1-2).
Pomperaug’s seniors had their moment at the opening whistle, playing the opening minutes of the match before a crowd of classmates, family and friends. A post-game ceremony followed, honoring their contributions to the program.
“I’ve become a better person because of these kids,” said Pomperaug Head Coach Tony Viscuso. “You can see in the joy and emotion right now that we’re a tight-knit group and a family.”
The Panthers remain unbeaten on the season thanks to another clean sheet kept by the defense and junior goalkeeper Madelyn Martino.
Masuk had about 10 opportunities to score in the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net with Martino delivering a performance that both head coaches raved about following the match.
“It’s one of the greatest goalkeeping performances I’ve ever seen, whether it’s boys or girls. Period.” said Viscuso, who spent several seasons as the boys coach for Masuk before joining Pomperaug this year. “Two of the saves she made, I have no idea how she got off her line and saved those.”
In 12 games, Pomperaug has allowed only two goals all season.
Martino said she was happy to deliver a standout effort for the seniors who were being honored on Senior Night.
“In the moment, I think about my team,” said Martino following the match. “I never want to let them down. I wanted to make it special for my seniors.”
Senior captain Katelyn Barstrom, who has been sidelined for the season due to injury, made the ceremonial start at kickoff before being subbed off to warm applause from the home crowd.
“It was a no-brainer to honor her,” said Viscuso. “She’s an amazing person and an incredible captain. She’s been there every step of the way, supporting us.”
Seniors honored after the game included Barstrom, captain Mariella Genovese, Alana Drauss-McDaniel, Emelia Luis, Najia Shihu, Madelyn DiDonato, Cailtyn Belleshiem and Emelia Capellini.
The fifth consecutive shutout keeps Pomperaug atop the SWC rankings and at the No. 2 ranking in the CIAC Class L rankings.
Pomperaug’s next match is Thursday, October 9 at Brookfield High School.
