A large-print Scrabble board, still in its plastic wrapping, sits in a corner surrounded by puzzles and games.

Nearby, a pair of recliners are divided by a well-stocked bookshelf. On another table, craft supplies and playing cards await the first hands of the day.

It’s designed like a community living room, and its atmosphere is intentional here at Happy Days Adult Day Center, which opened this summer in Southbury.

Located at 1450 Southford Road, its owner, Jackie Yannes, brings years of experience as an activities director and former owner of similar daycare centers in Seymour.

“I just saw a need for people who are living at home to still be mentally active, and to give caregivers a break during the day,” she said.

Each day at Happy Days promotes a blend of social, mental and physical engagement designed for older adults who benefit from interaction during the day.

There’s room for large motor activities like indoor bocce and volleyball, as well as seated activities with the Nintendo Wii.

“They can get involved as little or as much as they want, but we would encourage them to get involved with things,” said Yannes.

Coffee and muffins are available in the mornings, and a hot lunch is delivered each day. Based on each day’s schedule, the center may host occasional special events, such as an ice cream social and mocktail “happy hours”.

Happy Days, which recently held an open house, will be initially staffed by Yannes and two part-time workers.

Yannes, a lifelong crafts and gardening enthusiast, said she enjoys giving participants the chance to take home something they’ve made for their families.

She acknowledged the need for giving family members and caregivers a break from the demands of daily caregiving, while knowing their loved ones are engaged and well cared for.

“My job, and what I love to do, is to make them feel important and worthy,” said Yannes. “And it’s always nice to make something for somebody.”

Happy Days opens its doors at a time when Southbury’s population is aging: according to the town’s 2022-23 annual report, roughly 36 percent of residents are 60 or older. For families and seniors alike, Happy Days provides a new option for engagement and activity during the day.

Happy Days is open weekdays on Southford Road, with rates of $15 per hour or $110 for the full 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. day.
