Southbury will implement a four-day workweek pilot program this summer for select departments within Town Hall and the Senior Center.
Starting June 1, the condensed, four-day schedule will feature new hours of operation:
Monday: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Tuesday: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Wednesday: 8:00am – 6:00pm
Thursday: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Friday: Closed
The following departments would be affected by the change in schedule: Assessor, Tax, Town Clerk, Selectman, Human Resources, Finance, IT, Land Use, Building, Emergency Management, Fire Marshal, Economic Development and the Senior Center.
The Public Works Department, along with the Parks and Rec Department, will remain on their current schedules.
The three-month trial period is subject to review by the First Selectman, Human Resources and Finance offices as they gather employee and public feedback.
A memo from the town’s human resources department cites other towns in the state, such as Vernon, Plainville and Redding as municipalities that have successfully implemented similar schedules. Lunches will be shortened from one hour to 30 minutes during the pilot program.
“It’s something we can do for the employees that would give them a Friday off,” First Selectman Manville said. “It’s more about morale for the employees.”
The topic was discussed at the most recent Senior Commission meeting, where it was confirmed that some classes would need to be temporarily rescheduled.
Senior Center Director Andrea Corcoran said that three exercise classes (Muscle Tone, Line Dancing, and Tai Chi) would be moved to different days during the duration of the pilot program. Times for said classes will be announced in the future.
“We do hope to have it finalized soon,” said Corcoran. “We’re not getting rid of any classes.”
