Words Across Miles, a student-run organization at Pomperaug High School, is partnering with Sustainable Southbury for a community bottle drive fundraiser benefiting a national veterans organization.

The drive will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, from noon to 2 p.m. at 800 Main Street South.

Proceeds from the bottle drive will be donated to Homes For Our Troops, a Taunton, Massachusetts-based nonprofit that builds and donates specially adapted homes for severely injured post-9/11 veterans across the country. The organization’s work is aimed at helping veterans regain independence and rebuild their lives following combat-related injuries.

In their most recent annual fundraiser, Words Across Miles raised funds for Operation Second Chance, which assists wounded and ill veterans.

Residents participating in the bottle drive are asked to follow updated recycling guidelines. As of September, EyeRecycle requires aluminum cans to be bagged separately from plastic bottles. Plastic bottles must be sorted by size, under 1 liter, 1 liter, and 2 liters, and glass bottles must be placed in cardboard boxes to prevent breakage.

Additional details on accepted items, presorting requirements, and use of the express lane are available through Sustainable Southbury.
