Letter: Celebrating Democracy in Southbury

Elections are celebrations of democracy, and this week marked a powerful moment of renewal and possibility for many areas, especially the Town of Southbury. Regardless of how you interpret the results, we should be proud that more people voted in our 2025 municipal election than any previous municipal election.

On that note, I extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated Town Hall employees, especially in the Town Clerk’s office, and to our Registrars of Voters, as well as the many workers who helped on both Election Day and with early voting. Jobs well done!

After ten years under First Selectman Manville, we now turn the page to a new chapter in Southbury’s story. Congratulations to Tim O’Neil, Cathy DeCarli, Kelly Keenan, Wendy Bernard, and all of the other newly-elected candidates on a remarkable victory that reflects our community’s desire for fresh leadership, transparency, and a communicative, responsive government that works for everyone.

To the volunteers who knocked on doors, made calls, and believed in a better future, thank you. To every voter who showed up and made their voice heard, thank you. And let me be clear, this gratitude extends to all people of Southbury. No matter whom you campaigned for or supported, your participation strengthens our shared community.

Despite our occasional differences, I also want to thank First Selectman Manville and members of his party (especially Anne Armeno) for their years of dedication to our town. I also want to wish my good friend Justin Bette well as he steps down from elected office.

Now the campaign ends, and the real work begins. Together, we will roll up our sleeves, unite as one community, and build the stronger, brighter Southbury that we all deserve. Here’s to collaboration, progress, and a future full of opportunity.
