Chip sealing is a process that involves spraying an asphalt emulsion on the pavement, layering in gravel and compacting it. It is known as a cost-effective way to extend the life of a roadway by sealing cracks and preventing further water damage.
While milling and repaving a mile of road can reach well into the six figures, chip sealing typically costs about $35,000 per mile.
Other Connecticut towns that use chip sealing to extend the life of their roads include Trumbull, Fairfield, Shelton and Easton.
